Monday, March 15th found me in the Noakes yard in Woolwich, a suburb of Sydney, waiting for the M36 “Casamajor” to arrive on the truck from Port Kembla after an enjoyable weekend that included the post-twilight race barbecue at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (www.rsys.com.au) Friday night, a visit to the owner’s farm in the country (where I greatly enjoyed seeing his six acres of gardens he has developed over the last twenty years) on Saturday and lunch with his son and family in Sydney on Sunday. The truck arrived on time just after noon and the yard unloaded the mast and boat. The Noakes facility in Woolwich (www.woolwichdock.com) is located in a historic dry dock that was carved out of the sandstone and originally opened in 1901. Now the dry dock area is permanently flooded with floating docks along one side and the old floating end door is moored at the inside end and it provides very protected, deep water dockage.

“What could go wrong?” I remember asking myself after assuring the new M36 owner that we could make the delivery of his boat into Australia from Maine a simple and enjoyable process, Morris Yachts has shipped more than a dozen sailboats and daysailers around the world to owners in Europe and Japan, but this was my first overseas delivery.. Well, as it turns out, there are lots of things that can go wrong but in the end it turned out that very little did, due in large part to working with some great people around the world and doing our homework on our end.

The second week of January felt just like June in Northeast Harbor, only 70 degrees colder. There was quite the bustle of activity surrounding the launch of M3660 which is on its way to Australia. Production was in the yard on Monday to put the finishing electrical touches on the mast. Tuesday the push was on to get the boat launched with enough tide left to step the mast (we had to launch our inflatable icebreaker to clear out the launch pen).

Despite the winter chill in the air, a startling realization came over me as I was replying to a customer’s email a few days ago. Commissioning season begins in less than 10 weeks! Accordingly, the fall slumber has led to a bustling winter for Morris Service. In addition to the routine maintenance of the nearly ninety boats we store, several, more major projects have developed.

I had a lot of fun working with the MDI High boat building class. The kids were typical high school kids in that they were easily distracted, but when challenged with the work, they responded with interest and even ability. They weren't afraid of the dirt or work but were a little apprehensive of using the machines (thank God).

Peter Smith, our Chief Engineer reports on his trip south with the M29 in tow.
On Monday, February 2nd, Cuyler and Will asked me if I would tow the M29 on its trailer to Miami. I had mentioned to them a few weeks before that I would volunteer for the trip, and my wife Pam kept asking me about the possibility of driving down. As soon as they asked, I checked in with Pam to see if she wanted go with me. I don’t remember exactly what she said on the phone but it was something like how soon can we get going and why do we have to wait until Thursday to leave.

Morris Yachts participated in the 2008 Southampton Internationals Boat Show or SIBS. The M-36 "Philovent II" from Benodet in Brittany was a real head turner! In a time frame of two weeks she was sailed 600 nm to and from her home port.
