A First! Morris Yachts to show Morris 48 Plein Air at Seattle's Boat Afloat Show Jan 24-Feb 2

10 January 2008

Plein Air’s owner took delivery of the yacht last year and has reported back to Morris that they enjoyed a summer of daysailing around Seattle and cruising the San Juan Islands and that the boat far exceeded their expectations for performance and ease of handling. Plein Air’s three-cabin layout, raised deck salon and dinette up arrangement make this a perfect cruising boat.

By next summer Morris will also have three M36s plying the waters on Puget Sound. “We have always believed that there is a strong market in the Pacific Northwest for our M-Series and our Ocean Series.” said Cuyler Morris, President of Morris Yachts. “We are thankful that Seattle offers two terrific venues for both in-the-water and indoors for showing our boats. We couldn’t be more pleased to be showing the Morris 48, a perfect boat for cruising in the Pacific Northwest or anywhere in the world.”

The Morris 48 is intended as a fast yet extremely durable long distance cruising yacht that is also suitable for competition in point to point long distance racing. The hull and deck are constructed of highly engineered unidirectional E-glass and Kevlar reinforcements over Core-cell closed cell foam and hydrex vinylester resins making her hull light but incredibly strong. Her hull design is aimed at all out speed under IMS or PHRF rules, while maintaining the kind of safety at sea that one expects from Morris Yachts. Her fair shape, long waterline and sharp entry angle give her the long legs of a world traveler. A carbon spade rudder is fitted as standard. Her bulb keel gives her an unusually low center of gravity for ultimate safety and smart windward performance. For maneuvering under power or when the wind dies, she is equipped with a 56 horsepower sail drive Yanmar engine producing speeds of 8 knots.

She is also designed for ease of handling. The triple spreader mast with swept-back spreaders and wide chain-plate base is arranged so that passage forward along the side decks is unimpeded. The 105% fore-triangle jib sheets inboard of the upper shrouds, offer excellent sailing performance at all wind angles and eliminate the need for exhaustive winch grinding with every tack. To cruise coastal areas or oceans of the world she can be fitted with a shoal or deep draft keel. An owner can expect to outrun most other sailboats in this size range while enjoying finger tip tracking and the legendary sailing performance that Morris Yachts has become known.

The Morris 48 is very much at home offshore. Her prototype was designed for her owner to cruise from above the Arctic Circle to the tropics, or race to Bermuda. Currently, there are two Morris 48s about to embark on world wide cruising itinerary. On your home away from home, everywhere you look inside the 48 there are hand-built furnishings and precision fitted joiner-work, thick handholds, and layers of impeccably applied varnish. Her raised salon with big strong windows let world in. Bent at about mid height, add to the aesthetics but also make the windows 86 percent stiffer than flat panes. She can be configured either dinette or galley up under the raised salon. Either option will provide spectacular views whether you are preparing or enjoying a meal. Her elegantly and beautifully finished interior in your choice of woods feature two cabins and two full heads, a spacious salon, practical navigation station and a well-appointed galley. Storage is accessible and plentiful.
