A Swan 44 is in for more work this winter, including the installation of a secret weapon for the upcoming double-handed division of the Bermuda Race. Morris Service ready for winter refit projects (and post-Irene repairs)

in
5 September 2011

As the summer season winds down Morris Service is entering one of its favorite times of year. We receive many interesting phone calls from boat owners wanting to modify their boat to a superior quality and we enjoy bringing their vision to life. Sometimes this can involve drawing on our core competencies as a luxury boat builder to find solutions to complex problems and other times it can be something as routine as a pump replacement or a new Awlgrip paint job. Either way, we’re here and excited to hear from both new and existing customers.

Fortunately, we were unscathed by Irene and thanks to the 24 hour crew we had on duty over the storm weekend all of the 100+ boats under our care came through undamaged. If you are further South and felt the effects of Irene more severely, then don’t hesitate to call us to discuss your boat repair needs. Our crew at each of our two service yards is on hand to answer your questions and help you in any way.

Dry and corroded steering cable
23 August 2010

by Chris Jordan
Morris Service Writer

Picture the following scenario: A beautiful August afternoon in Maine gradually gives way to approaching grey skies to the west. Thunderstorms are in the forecast. An hour run separates you from your home port. You’re on the end slip of a float with an ever stiffening wind on the stern. A boat on the end of the float hangs over the float by 5 feet obstructing your ability to back straight off the float.

Wet Core & Potholes

Ok, two unrelated items- this must be a joke of some kind. If you have had the misfortune to experience them, you know that they are not. The potholes & wet core do have similarities and can be serious trouble. For both, water normally sheds the outer surface and all is well until a crack or point of entry allows water to get below the skin. What happens after that depends on the size of the opening, the material under the skin (whether boat or roadway) and the loads on the skin and structure (core) under it.

The Morris service yard in Northeast Harbor, ME
27 July 2009

You had planned on sailing for a couple of weekends but work, social and family obligations are going to keep you away from your boat for a bit longer than planned. While she will probably be fine laying on her mooring or at the dock, there a few things you can do to have her ready to go when you return.
